At the recent CBHTF , the new range of Sports tech designed to improve your Child’s enjoyment of games was on display. A good way for children and for that matter adults too is listening to music while performing sports or exercise outdoors. The problem with most of them is that they fall off easily, or the wires get tangled and some parents get nervous about children getting caught up in wires and very few headsets are designed for outdoors. There are always in-ear headphones, though the worry with kids is they might lead to potential accidents due to their drawback of cutting off the environmental sound.
So a company called AfterShokz has developed Trekz, a set of wireless bone-conducting headphones specifically designed for the outdoors. Don’t let the term Bone-conducting worry you, it’s something we all experience every day. The bone-conducting headphones send music from cheek bones to inner ear allowing the user to enjoy the ultimate open ear listening experience while keeping situational awareness – which translates to ‘ the user isn’t completely cut off from the world an can still hear you calling them if they wander off and into potential danger. The additional benefit of being waterproof is a good touch, though whether that extends to repeatedly wearing them while singing in the shower as my two did, remains to be seen. While they may not help turn your child into the next Usain Bolt – they will at least encourage them to spend a bit more time outdoors and away from the ever-present iPad… which is a reason to give them a try .
